Description

Every BHAKTA bottle carries a year, not an age statement. This one was distilled from a single harvest in 1978, laid down in oak, and left to the slow work of Gascon cellars until it was ready, years later, to be bottled exactly as it came out of the cask.

Tasting Notes
Aspect Dark mahogany with reddy lights.
Nose Prunes, figs, cherries, raisins, blackcurrant, lots of rancio on the nose, toasted bread, roasted meat, wet leaves, and moss. A touch of old varnish. Burnt caramel, nuts, and PX Sherry.
Palate Sweet sensation in the mouth. Prunes and caramel. Powerful yet mellow. Iron fist in a velvet glove, packed with dried fruits and spices. Allspice, cinnamon, nutmeg. Well-balanced oak with overriding sweetness and slightly astringent tannins. Easy drinking with a long and nutty rancio finish.

The Vintage Story

1978

The year in the bottle

The People’s Temple “Jonestown Suicides” in Guyana shock and perplex the world, as 909 cult members die after drinking a grape-flavored drink mix laced with cyanide. The Sex Pistols hold their last concert, the first Home Depot opens, the first Garfield comic debuts, and Japanese explorer Naomi Uemura becomes the first person to reach the North Pole on a solo overland journey. Egypt and Israel sign the Camp David Accords. At the Academy Awards, Woody Allen’s Annie Hall wins Best Picture. America’s first legal casino opens in Atlantic City. Grease, National Lampoon’s Animal House, and Superman top the box office. The Volkswagen Beetle stops production. Harry Winston and Harvey Milk die; Ashton Kutcher, Perez Hilton, James Franco, and Ron DeSantis are born. Cabbage Patch Kids, Coors Light, LaserDisc, and Reese’s Pieces are released.

Media Reviews

“In this vintage paradigm, every release is special, limited in quantity — there’s only so much of any given spirit made in any given year.”
“You don’t have to love brandy to love this. . . Terrific sipping and thus an epic preview of things to come from the nascent producer.”
“The World’s Best Bourbon.”
