Description

Every BHAKTA bottle carries a year, not an age statement. This one was distilled from a single harvest in 1878, laid down in oak, and left to the slow work of Gascon cellars until it was ready, years later, to be bottled exactly as it came out of the cask.

Tasting Notes
Aspect Deep mellow brown with rich deep mahogany highlights and lovely viscosity on the glass.
Nose Surprising orange zest is the first note on the nose. Deep thick-cut orange marmalade with brown demerara sugar. Musty in a good way with leather-bound books, overriding notes of orange and dark chocolate. Fresh.
Palate Sweet sensation in the mouth with deep rich flavors. raisins, preserved cherries, orange zest, lemon, prunes, muscat, notes of butterscotch on the nose. Rich, treacly, and molasses on the nose. Old cigar boxes, notes of tobacco, and spice in the mouth. Full of life, extremely smooth with a delicate and pleasant bitterness on the back of the tongue. Soft spices like nutmeg, vanilla, cinnamon, and cloves. Long aromatic finish.

The Vintage Story

1878

The year in the bottle

The Gilded Age begins in America—inaugurating a spectacular period of growth. Railways spread across the country, connecting people, commodities, and ideas like never before. Political corruption reaches an all-time high, but Americans turn out to vote anyway—in record numbers. An emerging system of private finance, complete with its own cast of “Robber Barons,” sees New York City cement its position as the nation’s economic hub. Edison patents the phonograph. A bicycle craze sweeps the nation. The last witchcraft trial is held in Salem, Massachusetts—more than two centuries after the first. Tolstoy publishes Anna Karenina. The Tokyo Stock Exchange is established. Novelist Upton Sinclair, boxer Jack Johnson, and poet Carl Sandburg are born.

Media Reviews

“In this vintage paradigm, every release is special, limited in quantity — there’s only so much of any given spirit made in any given year.”
“You don’t have to love brandy to love this. . . Terrific sipping and thus an epic preview of things to come from the nascent producer.”
“The World’s Best Bourbon.”
