Description

Every BHAKTA bottle carries a year, not an age statement. This one was distilled from a single harvest in 1868, laid down in oak, and left to the slow work of Gascon cellars until it was ready, years later, to be bottled exactly as it came out of the cask.

Tasting Notes

Aspect Deep amber color, dark orange, lovely viscosity.

Nose Extremely attractive nose that jumps out of the glass with vivacity. Old libraries and books, worn leather chairs. Rich fruit with orangey notes and roasted nuts like walnuts/almonds. Polished wooden floors and cigar boxes, antique furniture.

Palate Explosive in the mouth with great liveliness and mellow tannins, considering its age. Extraordinarily complex with such a wonderful earthy rancio expressing its age with stone fruits and kernels. Creamy and rich texture and such supple smoothness. Notes of extremely ripe pears, quince, cinnamon, spice, nutmeg, allspice. Patisserie notes, hot cross buns, cinnamon toast and dark chocolate. Spicy and peppery long-lasting finish.

Returns cannot be accepted after delivery, but a refund may be requested before your order leaves the fulfillment facility. If your package arrives damaged, please contact us with photo evidence so we can file a claim on your behalf.

The year in the bottle

Napoleon III liberalizes the French press—completing a program of reform initiated by his uncle Jérôme. In the US, Civil War hero and Union General Ulysses S. Grant is elected president—while Andrew Johnson becomes the first to be impeached. Memorial Day is observed for the first time. Edison applies for his first patent. Cornell and the University of California are founded. The Fourteenth Amendment guarantees African Americans full citizenship and equal protection under the law. Wyoming becomes a US Territory, the traffic light is invented, the stapler is patented, and John William de Forest coins the phrase “Great American Novel.” Horatio Alger, pioneering author of the rags-to-riches genre, is in his prime, publishing three novels in one year. The first documented bicycle race is held in France.
